CHATTOGRAM, March 14, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Navy and police have apprehended 37 Rohingyas who escaped from the Bhasan Char shelter camp.
The joint operation took place Friday night in the Beribandh area of Santoshpur union in Sandwip upazila. Local residents spotted the group at Hilsa ghat around 11:30 pm and alerted authorities, prompting their detention by police and navy personnel.
The group included 8 men, 6 women, and 23 children and adolescents. They told that brokers had promised to take them to the Sitakunda coast for a fee of Tk 5,000.
The Rohingyas had left Bhasan Char last Tuesday, initially taking refuge in Paraban. They set out on a small boat toward Sitakunda on Wednesday night, but their boat sank near the shore and they were rescued by another vessel.
Running out of fuel before reaching Sitakunda, they drifted at sea for three days. The brokers reportedly abandoned them at Sandwip Ghat after taking their money, gold ornaments, and mobile phones.
Sandwip Police Station OC Zahed Noor arranged temporary shelter for the group at the Santoshpur Union Parishad building. Following administrative orders, they are scheduled to be returned to the Bhasanchar shelter camp.
