DHAKA, April 1, 2026 (BSS) - Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md Abdus Salam today reaffirmed that Dhanmondi Lake will not be allowed to turn into a commercial zone, stressing the need to preserve its natural environment.

"Dhanmondi Lake is not a commercial area. There is a severe shortage of breathing spaces in Dhaka city. We want to preserve this lake in its original natural form," he said.

The DSCC administrator made the remarks while talking to journalists after visiting the lake this afternoon.

During the visit, he expressed dissatisfaction over the presence of numerous restaurants and commercial establishments around the lake area.

"Our main objective should be to embrace nature here. But it now appears that the entire area has been taken over by restaurants, which is not acceptable in any way. We will soon restore a beautiful and healthy environment," he added.

Highlighting steps for proper maintenance, he said a monitoring committee would be formed within a week, comprising local residents and city corporation officials. Future development and maintenance activities would be carried out based on the committee's recommendations.

Emphasizing community involvement, Salam said protecting the lake's environment would not be possible without active participation of local residents.

"Long-term solutions cannot be ensured by the police or city corporation alone. We want local residents to act as guardians of the lake," he added.

Referring to environmental and cultural aspects, he instructed authorities to preserve the cultural heritage of Rabindra Sarobar without causing any harm to nature.

Replying to a question, he said public engagement is essential to sustain DSCC drives, adding that the lake would regain its familiar beauty if residents remain aware and cooperative.

Architect Iqbal Habib and senior city corporation officials were present during the visit.
