DHAKA, April 9, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today placed former director general (DG) of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), Lt Gen (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, on a three-day remand in a case lodged over the killing of BNP activist Makbul in 2022.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Mohammad Zunayed passed the order as police produced the accused before the court and pleaded to place him on a seven-day remand.

A team of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detained Khaled from his Mirpur DOHS residence on the night of March 25.

According to the case documents, BNP leaders and activists as part of their party program on December 10, 2022, began to gather in the capital. Marking the programme, police and Awami League men created a ruckus in front of the BNP headquarters in Naya Paltan on December 7. They entered the BNP office, charged batons and opened fire at the BNP men, injuring Makbul critically.

Makbul later died from his injuries at the hospital. The case was filed on September 30, 2024.
