Zilqad moon not sighted; month to begin April 20

DHAKA, April 18, 2026 (BSS) - The moon of Zilqad for the year 1447 Hijri was not sighted anywhere in the sky of Bangladesh today and therefore the current month of Shawwal will complete 30 days tomorrow, with Zilqad set to begin from April 20.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee held this evening at the conference room of the Islamic Foundation at Baitul Mukarram.

The meeting was chaired by Secretary of the Ministry of Religious Affairs Munshi Alauddin Al Azad.

The committee reached the decision after reviewing information on moon sighting reports received from all district administrations, the head office of Islamic Foundation, its divisional and district offices, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department and the Space Research and Remote Sensing Organization (SPARRSO).

Director General of Islamic Foundation Abdus Salam Khan, Khatib of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque Mufti Abdul Malek, Administrator of Bangladesh Waqf Administration Md Shahin Hossain, Chief Information Officer Yakub Ali and Principal of Dhaka Alia Madrasa Professor Mohammad Obaidul Haque, among others, were present at the meeting.
