RAJSHAHI, April 23, 2026 (BSS) - A severe heatwave sweeping across Rajshahi has disrupted daily life, with temperatures soaring to 40 degrees Celsius and forcing many residents to remain indoors.

Rickshaw puller Nawshad, 53, ventured out at noon with a 'gamcha' wrapped around his head but found no passengers. Like many day labourers, he is struggling to earn a living as the extreme heat keeps people off the streets.

Since the beginning of Baishakh, residents have been enduring rising temperatures, with Rajshahi recording the highest readings in the country for the past several days.

On Wednesday, the city registered a maximum temperature of 40 degrees Celsius - the highest so far this season. The temperature stood at 39.5 degrees Celsius on Tuesday and 38 degrees Celsius the day before, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

Despite occasional drops of rain, no measurable rainfall has been recorded, prolonging the heatwave and intensifying public suffering.

Meteorological officials classify heatwaves as mild at 36-37.9 degrees Celsius, moderate at 38-39.9 degrees, severe at 40-41.9 degrees, and very severe at 42 degrees or above. By this measure, Rajshahi experienced a severe heatwave on Wednesday.

Rahidul Islam, in-charge of the Rajshahi Weather Observatory, said temperatures have been on a steady rise since mid-March. Although two spells of nor'wester rains brought brief relief, the mercury has climbed again in recent days.

The relentless heat has affected all aspects of life, with residents reporting unbearable conditions both day and night. Work activities have slowed significantly, while animals are also struggling in the sweltering conditions.

Hospitals are witnessing a surge in heat-related illnesses. At Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, the number of patients suffering from diarrhoea and other ailments has increased sharply. The hospital's three paediatric wards are overcrowded, with patients occupying both beds and floors.

Dr Shankar Kumar Biswas, spokesperson for the hospital, said cases of diarrhoea, heatstroke, fever, cold and cough are rising daily, with children and the elderly being the most affected.

He advised vulnerable groups to avoid going outdoors during peak heat hours, stay in cool environments, and drink plenty of safe water, coconut water and fresh local fruits to stay hydrated.
