SAVAR, April 25, 2026 (BSS): The law enforcement agencies have arrested one Shamim alias Swapan (40) in connection with the brutal killing of SSC examinee Nahida Akter at Dhamrai upazila under Dhaka district.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dhamrai Thana Nazmul Huda Khan confirmed the matter at a press briefing here today. He said the accused was arrested following a special drive using modern information technology.

According to the police, the incident took place on Thursday at Lakuriyapara area under Dhamrai municipality, where Nahida Akter, a commerce student of Dhamrai Central School and an SSC candidate of this year, was brutally murdered inside her home. Gold ornaments she was wearing were also looted, causing widespread panic in the area, police added.

After a case was filed, law enforcement agencies launched an operation to nab the suspect. As part of that effort, Shamim was arrested on Friday night with the help of advanced technology.

Police said Shamim, a resident of Ashulia area, had been living as a tenant in the same building where Nahida was residing along with her grandmother.

During the preliminary interrogation, Shamim confessed that he was addicted to online gambling and burdened with debt. On the day of the incident, he entered Nahida’s house in the absence of her grandmother, Delwara Begum, on the pretext of asking for chili to fry eggs. He then strangled Nahida with her scarf, pushed her to the floor and attacked her with a sharp weapon. At one stage, he smashed her face with a grinding stone to ensure her death and fled with her gold ornaments.

Nahida’s mother, Liza Akter, is an expatriate, while her father, Nur Hossain, lives in Barishal. She had been living with her grandmother in a rented house at Lakuriyapara of Dhamrai upazila.

It is noted that Nahida was studying in her room on the afternoon of the incident when her grandmother went out to buy milk. Upon returning, she found her granddaughter lying in a pool of blood. With the help of locals, Nahida was first taken to a local hospital and later to Gonoshasthaya Kendra Hospital, where the attending doctors declared her dead.

OC Nazmul Huda Khan said that legal proceedings against the arrested accused are currently underway.
