PM orders quick rehabilitation of evicted hawkers

DHAKA, April 25, 2026 (BSS)- Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has asked the concerned authorities to take necessary measures for quick rehabilitation of the hawkers evicted from city streets.

The premier gave the instruction at a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in the city's Tejgaon area this afternoon, said a PMO press release. 

According to the release, the Prime Minister asked for selecting alternative places for rehabilitation of the hawkers quickly through coordination among the relevant ministries and institutions.

The Prime Minister said that the evicted hawkers must be rehabilitated in such places where they can conduct business comfortably and with enthusiasm.

The meeting decided that the government will arrange alternative places for the evicted hawkers. Simultaneously, identity cards will be provided to the hawkers through registration so that their activities can be managed in an orderly manner.

The Prime Minister stressed on taking necessary measures to reduce traffic congestion in the city during school time. He observed that uncontrolled vehicle parking in front of educational institutions causing traffic congestion.
 
To solve this problem, he said, a part of the grounds of the respective educational institutions should be used for car parking.

Local Government Division Secretary Md. Shahidul Hassan, Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) Chairman Engineer Md Reazul Islam, DNCC Administrator Md Safiqul Islam Khan and DSCC Administrator Abdus Salam, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) acting Commissioner Md Sarwar and DIG Traffic Anisur Rahman were present at the meeting. 

Recently, several hundred shops were evicted from the roads of Mirpur-1 area under DNCC and Motijheel, Baitul Mukarram, Paltan and Gulistan areas under DSCC.
