CHATTOGRAM, June 7, 2026 (BSS) - City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain announced that the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) is implementing a project to plant 10 lakh trees aimed at safeguarding the environment, mitigating the negative impacts of climate change, and transforming Chattogram into a sustainable green city.
The mayor made the remarks during the launch of a month-long tree care initiative organized in observance of the World Environment Day at the Binnaghas Project area in Tiger Pass today.
He said that the Prime Minister has pledged to plant 25 crore trees over the next five years. This initiative is both visionary and timely, he said, adding that extensive greening is essential and if every citizen contributes planting and nurturing trees, it would be possible to create a green, clean, and environmentally friendly Bangladesh.
“In alignment with the Prime Minister’s vision, 10 lakh trees are being planted in the city to restore environmental balance, initiated by the CCC in partnership with various social organizations. All mid-islands from Kalurghat to the airport will be adorned with flowers and greenery,” he said.
Besides enhancing the aesthetics of the roads, significant tree planting will occur in numerous vacant lots, parks, and open spaces throughout the city, the mayor said, adding that 6,500 saplings from 26 different species are currently being planted on the road island between Dewanhat and Barik Building in the city.
The saplings include Jarul, Sonalu, Radhachura, Kamini, Kanchan, Hasnahena, Gandharaj, Shiuli, and approximately 10 species of endangered native trees. Proper measures are also being implemented to care for these trees, including daily watering and weed removal.
The mayor said, “Chattogram is a city rich in natural beauty. There are boasts seas, mountains, rivers, canals, valleys, and water bodies. Allah has blessed us with abundant resources. However, if we fail to properly care for and preserve these resources, future generations will face challenges.”
Acting Chief Executive Officer and Secretary of the City Council Md. Ashraful Amin, along with the mayor’s Waterlogging advisor were present at the event.
