BAGERHAT, June 27, 2026 (BSS) - A 24-hour ferry service has been inaugurated on the Pashur River at Mongla port of the district, aimed at easing river crossing difficulties for commuters and reducing accident risks.
State Minister for the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Lion Dr. Sheikh Faridul Islam inaugurated the 24-hour ferry service this morning at the ferry terminal adjacent to the Mongla Port bus stand.
Speaking at the inauguration, the minister said the new service has been introduced to address the long-standing suffering of thousands of worker employed at Mongla Port, the EPZ and surrounding industrial areas, as well as to reduce the risks linked with river crossings.
He noted that although ferry operations on the river began in 2003, services were previously limited to high tide periods. During the low tide, ferry movement remained suspended, causing significant inconvenience to the public.
Under the new arrangement, two ferries will operate continuously ensuring uninterrupted transport for both the passengers and the vehicles.
The minister also emphasized the importance of transparency in fare collection, instructing authorities to display official fare charts prominently at ferry terminals.
He urged the passengers not to pay fares if rate charts are not visibly posted, stressing the government’s commitment to accountability and public service.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior officials, including the Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) of Bagerhat district, engineers from the Roads and Highways Department, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer and municipal administrator of Mongla, as well as local political leaders and representatives.
