CHATTOGRAM, July 13, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad today said waterlogging in Chattogram city would be reduced significantly if all 21 sluice gates become fully operational.

He stressed the need for enhanced coordination with the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) to ensure proper maintenance of the project, with the goal of eliminating waterlogging in the city.

Relevant departments and agencies are working together to achieve this objective.

Farhad made the remarks as the chief guest at a views-exchange meeting on the progress of the 21 sluice gates being constructed under the project titled “Flood Control, Waterlogging Relief and Drainage Development in Chattogram City.”

The meeting was held this afternoon at the CCC conference room, where the project was formally handed over to the Chattogram City Corporation.

The state minister said that despite unprecedented rainfall, the government's coordinated efforts had substantially reduced waterlogging in the city.

He said the maintenance, operation and coordination of the ongoing waterlogging mitigation project, along with the activities of all relevant agencies, would be further strengthened to ensure its long-term benefits.

Farhad said the government believes in action rather than words. Even during the recent heavy rains, the sufferings of city residents were significantly reduced due to the coordinated efforts of the relevant agencies and public representatives.

He added that government officials, as well as party leaders and activists, had been directed to assist people affected by floods and waterlogging.

Chattogram City Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain chaired the meeting. Ershad Ullah, MP, Sayed Al Noman, MP, Chattogram Development Authority Chairman Engineer Belayet Hossain, and Chattogram WASA Managing Director Engineer Selim Md Jane Alam, among others, spoke as special guests.
