DHAKA, Sept 6, 2026 (BSS) - The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested two members of a gang accused of stealing gold ornaments by posing as traditional healers and luring victims through Facebook advertisements.

A CID Dhaka Metro-East team arrested Ziasmin Akter, 21, and Abdullah Mia, 66, during a raid in Fakirtilla area of Chhatak, Sunamganj, around 2am on September 3, said a press release.

According to investigators, the gang advertised traditional healing services on Facebook, promising cures for various illnesses and problems. 

After gaining victims’ trust through rituals and incantations at their homes, the suspects would ask them to gather their gold ornaments as part of the purported treatment.

The gang would then wrap the jewellery in a handkerchief and place it in water, distracting the victims before fleeing with the valuables.

The CID launched an investigation after a victim filed a case with Shahjahanpur Police Station in Dhaka in July. 

Using intelligence and technological analysis, investigators identified the gang and its Facebook pages.

Police recovered a gold ring and a gold chain with a pendant, weighing 21.83 grams and valued at around Tk 450,000, from Ziasmin’s possession.

The two suspects were sent to court with a remand plea. 

The CID said efforts are underway to arrest other members of the gang and recover the remaining stolen jewellery.
