DHAKA, Sept 7, 2026 (BSS) - The Kanchpur–Ilisha ferry service will be formally inaugurated tomorrow to directly connect Narayanganj with the island district of Bhola.

Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam will inaugurate the service at Kanchpur Ferry Terminal in Narayanganj.

According to Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) officials, the ferry service on the Kanchpur–Ilisha route began on a trial basis on August 27 with the aim of directly connecting the island district of Bhola with the mainland.

Currently, two BIWTC ferries -- Begum Sufia Kamal and Begum Rokeya -- are operating on the route.

One ferry departs daily from each terminal for its destination. A single trip between Kanchpur and Bhola, or Bhola and Kanchpur, takes approximately eight hours.

The officials said since its trial launch, the new ferry service has received a strong response from the people of Bhola. In particular, businesspeople and truck drivers are finding the route convenient to use.

BIWTC officials said the introduction of direct ferry connectivity will expand opportunities and improve access for the people of Bhola in various areas, including transportation, education, healthcare, and trade and commerce.
