JAMALPUR, May 24, 2025 (BSS) - Demands for justice have grown following the tragic death of Fazlul Karim, a 28-year-old garment worker who was fatally shot at police firing during July uprising movement in Dhaka.
Fazlul Karim, also known as Fazal, joined a jubilant procession in the Uttara area after his factory was closed for the day on August 5. Police opened fire indiscriminately on the crowd around 4:30pm. A bullet struck Fazlul in the chest, exiting through his back.
His younger brother, Md Zilani, who was present at the spot, immediately rushed Fazlul to Bangladesh-Kuwait Friendship Hospital in Uttara by rickshaw.
The hospital, overwhelmed with injured victims, admitted him to the ICU with only oxygen and saline support. Later, doctors declared Fazlul dead two hours later, allegedly due to a lack of adequate treatment.
That night, Fazlul's body was taken to his ancestral village, Tangaripara in Bakshiganj upazila under Jamalpur district, where he was laid to rest the following morning. A large number of locals attended his Namaz-e-Janaza.
Born in Tangaripara village under Bagarchar union, Fazlul was the fifth of six sons of Shah Alam and Mst. Sufia Begum.
After passing his SSC, he enrolled in college but was unable to complete his HSC due to financial constraints.
Later, he moved to Dhaka in search of work and began his career in a small company in Azimpur before becoming a sample man at Best Shirt Ltd in Kunia, Gazipur, two years ago.
Fazlul was survived by his 23-year-old wife, Rani Begum, and their 22-month-old son, Md Afrahim Al Abir.
He married Rani Begum in 2018, and the couple had been living in Dhaka until his untimely death.
Rani, originally from Lalmonirhat district, now resides at her in-laws' house in Bakshiganj. Devastated by the loss, she has called for justice for her husband's killing and vowed to raise their son to be a responsible citizen.
Following the incident, Fazlul's elder brother Anowar Hossain filed a case against 39 individuals with Uttara police station.
The government and several organizations have extended financial support to the bereaved family. The family received Tk 2 lakh from the District Administration, Tk 25,000 from the Upazila Administration, Tk 5 lakh from the July Foundation, and Tk 50,000 from the BNP.
Deputy Commissioner Hasina Begum said, "We have provided financial assistance to the martyr's family. In cases of extreme hardship, we continue to extend all possible support."
The family and local residents continue to call for justice and accountability for the killing of Fazlul Karim.
