Patal cultivation makes Dinajpur farmer self-reliant

DINAJPUR, May 9, 2025 (BSS) - Entajul Haque, 32, a farmer of Birol upazila under the district, has become self-reliant through the cultivation of improved varieties of local Patal, an important summer vegetable in Bangladesh.

For the first time, the young farmer is smiling as he has made more profit in the cultivation of local varieties of Patal. He has received enough responses by cultivating this Patal. 

His success is encouraging many farmers of the Upazila. The local office of the Department of Agricultural Extension is working to encourage farmers to cultivate this vegetable.

Field Officer of the upazila Agricultural Extension Department Zainal Abdin said that last year, young farmer Entajul cultivated local varieties of Patal on 25 decimals of the land. 

Due to favorable weather, he said, the farmer got good yield of this summer vegetable. As a result, he made Taka 70,000 profit in Patal cultivation.

 In the current rabi and summer seasons, Entajul has cultivated high-yielding local varieties of Patal on 75 decimals of the land. 

He has decided to cultivate more land in the future as Patel is more profitable than other crops.

Patal farmer Entajul said, "My Patal production was bumper. I already sold vegetables to consumers. Because the demand for local Patal obtained from his land is very high among the customers. Local Patal is very tasty to eat." 

Sarwar Hossain, Birol Upazila Agriculture Officer of the district, said, "Around 10 to 12 years ago, hybrid Patal came in the market of the district. Hybrid Patal is not very tasty to eat" 

He said the Agricultural Extension Department has given importance to the use of modern methods of the cultivation of local Patal.
