Training on quality sugarcane seed production held in Thakurgaon

THAKURGAON, June 1, 2025 (BSS) - A two-day training programme on "Quality Seed Sugarcane Production Techniques and Its Use" concluded today at Sugarcrop Research Institute office in Thakurgaon, aimed at enhancing farmers' knowledge and practices in disease-free sugarcane seed production.

The training, under the 'Farmer-level Disease-free and Clean Sugarcane Seed Production and Extension (1st Revised) Project,' was inaugurated by Shahjahan Kabir, managing director of Thakurgaon Sugar Mill, as the chief guest.

The session was presided over by Sohrab Hossain, chief scientific officer of the Bangladesh Sugarcrop Research Institute (BSRI), Thakurgaon.

Dr. Md. Anisur Rahman, chief scientific officer and Head of the Pathology Department at BSRI, Ishwardi; Project Director Dr. Imam Hossain and Abu Raihan, general manager (Agriculture) of Thakurgaon Sugar Mill, addressed the event as special guests. 

A total of 60 sugarcane farmers from the Thakurgaon Sugar Mill region took part in the training. Two participating farmers also shared their personal experiences regarding seed production and usage during the program.

The training covered a range of areas designed to boost sugarcane yield and quality including the selection and multiplication of high-quality seed varieties, proper seedling production, field management practices, integrated pest and disease control and the use of eco-friendly fertilizers and pesticides.
