DHAKA, Aug 26, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Bank (BB) has invited applications from interested investors for establishing a digital bank aiming to expand access to digital-first financial services and foster innovation in the country's banking sector.

In a notice issued today, the central bank said that it will accept applications for digital bank licences from 1 to 30 September.

The central bank has, in principle, decided to issue licences for digital banks against suitable proposals under the Bank Company Act, 1991.

In the notice, BB said it recognises the changing global financial ecosystem driven by technological innovation and the challenges these changes bring. It emphasised its role in enhancing efficiency in financial services delivery and widening the outreach of the financial system.

"To achieve Sustainable Development Goals, capitalise on the transformative potential of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and support inclusive economic growth, it is imperative to promote Cottage, Micro, and Small Enterprises (CMSEs)," it added.

Digital banks are seen as a key enabler for improving access to credit, supporting marginalised groups, generating employment, and fostering long-term food security.
