DHAKA, June 22, 2026 (BSS) – In a significant step toward sustainable industrial development, Asian Paints Bangladesh Limited (APBL) has commissioned an 850 kWp rooftop solar power project at its manufacturing facility in the National Special Economic Zone (NSEZ), reinforcing the country's transition to clean energy and green industrialization.
The project, formally inaugurated on Sunday, represents one of the notable renewable energy initiatives undertaken by a manufacturing company operating within the country's largest economic zone.
According to a press release, the solar installation is expected to substantially improve energy efficiency while reducing the plant's carbon footprint, in line with the government's vision of climate-resilient industrial growth.
Built across approximately 7,000 square meters of the factory's 10,190-square-meter rooftop, the solar power system was installed without disrupting ongoing manufacturing operations.
The project was implemented under the Operational Expenditure (OPEX) model, enabling the company to avoid major upfront capital investment while benefiting immediately from renewable energy generation.
The 850 kWp facility is projected to generate around 1,440 megawatt-hours (MWh) of green electricity annually. Through this clean energy production, the project is expected to offset nearly 724 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year, contributing to national efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the solar project is also anticipated to deliver significant financial gains. Asian Paints Bangladesh expects to lower its electricity expenses by 20 to 25 percent compared with conventional grid power.
During peak daylight hours, the solar installation will be capable of meeting up to 70 percent of the factory's electricity demand, reducing pressure on the national power grid and enhancing energy reliability.
The initiative highlights the growing role of renewable energy within the National Special Economic Zone (NSEZ), a flagship industrial development project under the Prime Minister's Office.
Located along a 25-kilometre coastal stretch, the NSEZ has been designed as a modern industrial hub integrating advanced infrastructure and smart urban facilities to support the country's broader "Smart Bangladesh" vision.
Currently, 15 industries are in operation within the NSEZ, while another 20 industrial facilities are under construction. Since commencing production in the zone in 2021, Asian Paints Bangladesh has emerged as one of its leading manufacturers.
The company's latest solar investment further strengthens its commitment to sustainable manufacturing and aligns with national priorities aimed at enhancing industrial competitiveness through clean energy adoption.
Officials from Asian Paints Bangladesh Limited and the NSEZ, who attended the inauguration ceremony, emphasized that renewable energy projects of this scale are essential for ensuring long-term energy security, environmental sustainability and responsible industrial growth in Bangladesh.
