DHAKA, June 22, 2026 (BSS)- Bangladesh High Commissioner to the Maldives Dr. Md. Nazmul Islam today reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the rights, welfare and dignity of Bangladeshi expatriate workers living in the island nation.

The envoy said this while addressing Bangladeshi expatriates at the closing ceremony of a two-day consular outreach and service programme conducted by a delegation of the Bangladesh High Commission on Thulusdhoo Island in Kaafu Atoll, according to a press release received here today.

“Every Bangladeshi worker living abroad is an inseparable part of our national family.

Their relentless hard work, sacrifice and hard-earned remittances play the most significant role in strengthening Bangladesh’s economic foundation,” he said.

Dr. Islam said expatriate Bangladeshis serve as a vital humanitarian and economic bridge between Bangladesh and the Maldives, making it both a moral and institutional responsibility to ensure their welfare, security and dignity.

During his visit in the atoll, the High Commissioner held meetings with the Vice President of the Thulusdhoo Council, council members and senior local government officials.

The discussions focused on the working environment of Bangladeshi migrant workers, healthcare services, legal awareness and social security issues on the island.

Vice President of the Thulusdhoo Council highly praised the honesty, professional competence and sense of responsibility demonstrated by Bangladeshi workers, noting their valuable contribution to the island’s development and economic activities.

As part of the outreach programme, the Bangladesh High Commission provided a range of digital consular services to expatriates on the island, including accepting applications for e-passports and BMET smart cards at their doorstep.

An open discussion session was also arranged to hear directly from expatriates about their problems, concerns and expectations.

First Secretary (Labour) Motasem Billah responded to various queries raised by the expatriate workers during the interactive session.

To promote sports, social harmony and healthy lifestyles among expatriates, the High Commission distributed sports equipment among members of the Bangladeshi community.

He urged the expatriates to strictly comply with the laws and regulations of the Maldives and advised them to contact Bangladesh High Commission directly in case of emergencies or any difficulties.
