SANGSAD BHABAN, June 22, 2026 (BSS) - Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood today informed Parliament that the government is currently reviewing contracts signed with privately operated power plants in the country.

The minister disclosed the information in a written tabled question placed by ruling party lawmaker Nipun Roy Chowdhury (women seat-11) in the Jatiya Sangsad today.

He said the government is assessing the effectiveness, economic viability and compatibility of long-standing agreements in the power sector with the country’s current energy realities.

As part of this process, existing contracts with private-sector power plants have also been brought under evaluation.

“The government is reviewing the issue by considering the effectiveness of various contracts that have been in place for a long time, their economic justification and their consistency with the present energy situation,” the minister said.

Iqbal Hassan Mahmood noted that, in line with the government’s policy to reduce dependence on quick rental power plants, all such facilities in the country have already been retired from operation.

“As a result, a chapter of costly electricity generation has come to an end, creating an opportunity to make the power sector more sustainable and efficient,” he added.

The minister said the government is placing special emphasis on expanding renewable energy generation as part of its long-term strategy to build a reliable, affordable and environmentally friendly energy system.

He said various projects and programmes are being implemented to increase electricity generation from solar, wind and other renewable energy sources.

The minister further said that, alongside meeting the country’s growing electricity demand, the government is prioritising the modernisation of power generation systems, diversification of energy sources and the adoption of environmentally friendly technologies to ensure energy security.
