Govt reviews joint construction of 683MW hydropower plant with Nepal: Minister

SANGSAD BHABAN, June 22, 2026 (BSS) - Power, Energy and Mineral Resources 
Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood today told Parliament that Bangladesh is 
currently reviewing the joint construction of a 683-megawatt hydropower plant 
with Nepal.

"In a bid to import more hydropower from Nepal, the issue of jointly 
constructing a 683-MW hydropower plant is under review," he said, while 
replying to a starred question from ruling party lawmaker Fahima Nasrin 
(Women Seat-29).

The minister said Bangladesh is currently importing 40 megawatts hydropower 
from Nepal as part of energy cooperation with the Himalayan nation.

"If legal action is required in the regional hydropower sector in the future, 
necessary measures will be taken accordingly," he said.
