RANGPUR, Jan 12, 2025 (BSS) - Environmental activists have stressed on
enhancing GO-NGO initiatives in increasing production and use of enewable
energy, like solar, wind and hydropower, to build a green world for future
generations.

They also emphasized the importance of creating public awareness about
harmful effects of using fossil fuels and the potential of renewable energy
sources.

They viewed this at an awareness raising campaign on the production and use
of renewable energy for environmental protection in Mahiganj Tazhat area of
Rangpur metropolis on Sunday afternoon.

Non-governmental development organizations Development of Poor Society
(DOPS), Coastal Livelihood and Environmental Action Network (CLEAN) and
Bangladesh Working Group on Ecology and Development (BWGED) jointly organised
the campaign.

These organisations are working to promote renewable energy and build a
sustainable future for all through such promotional activities in other
regions of the country, including the Rangpur region.

Students, environmental development activists, organizers and local residents
participated in the programme arranged under the slogan 'We have a dream'.

Executive Director of DOPS Ujjal Chakraborty, Convener of Ecology and
Development Forum Sabbir Mustafa Arif Piyal, development and environmental
activists Nazim Uddin Sarkar Suman, Subal Mukherjee, university student
Mizanur Rahman, Redwanul Haque, among others, addressed the occasion.

Ujjal Chakraborty said that adopting renewable energy is not only very
important for the environment but also for economic development and creating
employment opportunities and strengthening the country's energy security.

"For this, private initiatives are necessary along with the government
programmes because the production and use of renewable energy is important
along with protecting the environment," he said.

Sabbir Mustafa Arif Piyal said that by 2050, 100 percent of the electricity
demand should be met using renewable energy. Currently, it is possible to
meet 2 percent of the total electricity demand in the country by using
renewable energy.

"In Rangpur district, it is possible to meet the demand for renewable
electricity by installing solar panels on many private lands and vacant
spaces along the river banks," he said.

In addition, it will be possible to meet the demand for electricity by
generating solar panels on the multi-storey building roofs in a planned
manner and supplying it to the national grid.

"This will reduce the need for fossil fuels and protect the environment,"
Piyal added.
