Jahangir Kabir, wildlife inspector of the Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division, Rajshahi, handed over the animal to safari park authorities.

Locals found the rare species in Dayarampur Sheikhpara area of Bagatipara upazila of Natore on Saturday.
Upon receiving the information, the police and officials of the Department of Livestock Services rescued the animal and identified it as a Nilgai.

Upazila Livestock Officer Dr. Abu Haider said they took the Nilgai into safe custody and provided first aid.

Bagatipara Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ha-Meem Tabassum Probha said after ensuring the safety of the Nilgai, they informed the Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division, Rajshahi.

Jahangir Kabir said the Nilgai is on the verge of extinction in Bangladesh as officially there are only 11 such species in the Gazipur Safari Park.

One of the animals in the safari park went missing few months ago, he said adding probably smugglers were behind the missing.

The rescued Nilgai may be the missing one, he noted saying it will be confirmed after investigation.
