3-day fair on fisheries products begins in Lakshmipur

LAKSHMIPUR, Feb 23, 2025 (BSS) - A three-day fair on "Fisheries Products" innovated by the fishermen began on the premises of Sadar upazila council here today.
 
Deputy Director (DD) of the Department of Fisheries (DoF) of Chittagong Division M Anwar Hossen inaugurated the fair through cutting a tape and flying balloons.

The fishermen of five districts including Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Feni, Noakhali and Lakshmipur have participated in the fair.

A total of 50 stalls have been set up in the fair which exhibiting various fishermen manufactured products including dry fishes, curd, agricultural products and Shitol pati. Even the winter season pithas have also been displayed in the fair.

The Ministry of Finance and Social Development Foundation jointly organised the fair under the sustainable coastal and marine fisheries project.

Later, a discussion meeting was also held at the upazila council premises with Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) M Jamshed Alam Rana in the chair.

District Fisheries Officer Mohammad Bilal Hossain, Sadar Upazila Assistant Commissioner (land) Avi Das, Deputy Project Director M Mizanur Rahman, Senior Assistant Director of District Fisheries Office M Jashim Uddin and Sadar Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer M Mahmudul Islam also spoke on the occasion.

"We have organised the fair to provide alternative employment for the fishermen," said DD of the DoF, adding that the fair is organised to display and market the products invented by the fishermen.

As the fishermen are very poor, the main objective of the fair is to make them self-reliant through imparting training on manufacturing various commodities, he said.

Some outdated items, familiar to the people, also displayed at the fair for reviving its glory to the new generation, he mentioned.
