SI assaulted at Patenga beach for barring drug consumption, 2 held

CHATTOGRAM, March 1, 2025 (BSS) – Two alleged drug addicts were detained for assaulting on duty Sub-Inspector (SI) at Chattogram’s Patenga Sea Beach for stopping a group of young men from or consumption of  hemp last night.

The attackers beaten up Yousuf Ali, a SI  and snatched his mobile phone, wallet and walkie-talkie  

 A patrol police team in cooperation with locals rescued him (SI) along with snatched goods including a knife and motorcycle soon after the incident. 

Police also detained the attackers. They are Saimon, 27, and Ali Emad Prokash Tafsir Emad, 22, additional deputy police commissioner (Public Relation and Media) Mahmuda Begum confirmed today.

 The incident took place around 11.30pm near Chapra Ghat in Patenga. SI Yousuf Ali of Patenga police outer ring road check post  was on duty in uniform at that time and noticed that  a group of young men were found consuming hemp on the beach.

When he asked them, they confessed their mistake and left the scene after saying apology. However, about an hour later, the same group returned with more cohorts. As SI Yousuf was heading toward his patrol vehicle, they surrounded him, wanted to see his ID card challenging  him as a fake police officer.

The situation speedily deteriorated, and the group physically assaulted him, taking away his walkie-talkie, mobile phone and wallet. 

Mahmuda Begum said, locals were seen questioning the attackers after detained them, according to a video footage.

She said. “They organized a mob and attacked the SI after he barred them from consuming drugs. The orchestrated the incident by accusing the SI as a fake police personnel. 

Police recovered the snatched goods of SI, she said, adding that they also recovered a motorcycle and small knife from their possessions. 

A case was filed under Speedy Trial Act with Patenga model police station.

 Police are conducting drives to detain other criminals, she added.
