RANGPUR, March 22, 2025 (BSS) - As Eid-ul-Fitr approaches, markets, shopping malls, and temporary shops in Rangpur are bustling with shoppers flocking to buy Eid items.
Although the festival is over a week away, many are eager to avoid the last-minute rush, traffic jams, and the hot weather that often accompany Eid shopping.
The surge in shopping is linked to an increase in income among the general public, which has boosted local businesses. However, despite the large crowds, some shopkeepers and business owners feel that sales have not yet met expectations.
Rangpur's major markets, including RMAC Shopping Complex, Rangpur Super Market, City Plaza, Salek Market, and others, have seen huge crowds.
Shoppers are particularly interested in clothing, footwear, cosmetics, and jewelry. Among the top choices for women are Indian sarees and Pakistani dresses, while men are opting for traditional attire like Punjabis and shirts.
Prices this year are about 10 to 20 percent higher compared to last year, with clothing and accessories for both adults and children reflecting this increase.
For example, women's three-piece outfits are priced between Tk 1,500 and 20,000, sarees range from Tk 1,500 to 35,000, while men's clothing such as shirt pieces and jeans are priced between Tk 1,000 and 7,000. Non-branded items, including garments, shoes, and jewelry from China, are also popular.
Traders are optimistic about sales, with the expectation that demand will continue to rise as Eid draws closer. Despite the current increase in shoppers, some businesses are still waiting for a major boost in sales. Many shop owners are hopeful that sales will pick up in the final days before the festival.
Security measures and traffic management have been enhanced to ensure a smooth shopping experience. Rangpur Metropolitan Police have stepped up monitoring to maintain law and order, allowing shoppers to purchase their items without concerns.
A number of shoppers, including young people and families, expressed satisfaction with the quality and variety of items available.
Talking to BSS, college students like Luna Akhter and Julekha Begum at Rangpur Super Market mentioned they had already purchased their Eid clothes, cosmetics, and shoes. They noted the price increase but said it was still manageable.
Similarly, a couple from Nilphamari, Zerin Mahbub and Mahbubur Rahman, were happy with their purchases for their children, despite the higher prices this year.
The markets are also seeing a large variety of garments, ranging from non-branded clothes for boys and girls to luxury imported items. Pakistani clothes, in particular, are popular among younger shoppers, while Indian sarees continue to be a favorite among women.
Overall, the festive shopping season is in full swing in Rangpur, with business owners and shoppers both preparing for a busy few days leading up to Eid.
