Experts for institutional delivery to reduce maternal, newborn mortality

GAIBANDHA, March 25, 2025 (BSS) - Speakers at a meeting today stressed the importance of institutional delivery to reduce maternal and newborn mortality. They said home delivery is risky, and every pregnant woman should undergo at least four check-ups to prevent complications.

The quarterly coordination meeting reviewed the progress of the Santal Health Project-2024 at Gobindaganj upazila health complex. 

Dr. Fahmida Shireen Neela, a consultant at the complex, presented a progress report. She explained that LAMB Hospital, in collaboration with UNFPA, is implementing the project in Shatmara union, which has a large Santal population.

Abdul Jalil, upazila family planning officer, presided over the meeting. Md. Tariqul Islam, deputy director of the department of family planning, attended as the chief guest, while Dr. Md. Masudar Rahman, upazila health and family planning officer, was the special guest.

They noted that the project has significantly reduced maternal and newborn mortality in the Santal community. They urged staff to remain dedicated and punctual to ensure the success of the project.

Md. Shariful Islam, district facilitator of LAMB, shared the project's achievements and called for continued cooperation from all involved.

The meeting was attended by health and family planning staff and NGO workers in the union.
