SYLHET, May 31, 2025 (BSS) – Water levels in major rivers in Sylhet continue to rise following several days of heavy rainfall and onrush of water from the upstream areas India.
The water levels of the trans-boundary rivers including Surma and Kushiyara are rising and are nearing the danger mark.
Sylhet Meteorological Department said that around 156 mm rainfall occurred from 12 noon to 3 pm today. Due to heavy rain, water is accumulating in various roads of Sylhet city, disrupting traffic. Various important establishments and courtyards of houses, including Osmani Medical College Hospital, have been submerged.
This has caused suffering to the common people and service seekers.
Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) has taken immediate measures to deal with this situation. A special emergency control room has been opened.
According to SCC sources, the control room has been set up on the second floor (room number 205) of the Sylhet City Corporation building for quick removal of rainwater and monitoring the situation.

An office order of the SCC said that the officers in charge of the concerned wards will be in their respective areas to directly inspect the situation and take immediate necessary measures.
Local residents said that due to this sudden heavy rain, knee-deep water accumulated in various places including Zindabazar, Qin Bridge area, Amberkhana, Bandarbazar, Tilagarh, Upashahar, Laldighirpar in the city.
The common people have been suffering a lot as water has entered many houses.
Flood Relief and Rehabilitation Center of the Water Development Board said that the water level in the rivers of Sylhet has started rising since Thursday night. Till 3 pm, the water level of all the rivers including Surma, Kushiyara, Dhalai, Piain and Sari rivers have increased.
Water is flowing close to the danger level at all points. At Kanaighat point in the district, the water level of Surma has increased by 11.66 meters till 3 pm today.
On Thursday evening, the water was flowing at 8.29 meters. It has increased by 3.37 meters in two days. Currently, the water is flowing 1.9 centimeters below the danger level. The water level is rising steadily at the Sylhet point of the Surma river. At this point, the water is flowing 1.49 meters below the danger level.
In the last two days, the water has increased by 2.08 meters. Currently, the water is flowing at a level of 9.31 meters.
Water is also rising rapidly in the hilly rivers of the border.
The Sylhet office of the Meteorological Department said that heavy rain started in Sylhet from Saturday afternoon.
Assistant Meteorologist of Sylhet Meteorological Office Shah Md. Sajib Hossain said that heavy rainfall and gusty winds continue in Sylhet due to the effect of a deep depression. The rain is expected to continue for the next three days.
