Four family members killed in Sylhet landslide

DHAKA, June 1, 2025 (BSS) - A devastating landslide in Sylhet's Golapganj upazila claimed the lives of four members of the same family in the early hours of today. 

The deceased have been identified as Md Riaz Uddin,55, a day labourer, his wife Rahima Begum,40 and their daughter Samia Begum,14 and son Ali Abbas,9. 

All were residents of Bakhtiar Ghat village under Lakshmanabonda union No. 7 of the Golapganj upazila in the district.

A nearby mound fell on their semi-pucca home, burying the house while the family was asleep, and they perished when a section of a rain-soaked mound collapsed onto their semi-pucca home.

According to Golapganj Police Station, the landslide occurred at Bakhtiar Ghat village following prolonged heavy rainfall.


Upon receiving the news, teams from the Bangladesh Army, Fire Service and local police rushed to the scene and with the help of villagers, conducted a rescue operation. 

The bodies were recovered after about three hours of intensive efforts.
    
Police have secured the bodies and notified the extended family. Arrangements for burial are underway.
