RAJSHAHI, June 1, 2025 (BSS) - Livestock experts at a discussion unequivocally called for boosting milk production and consumption to eradicate malnutrition and build a healthy society.
"Milk consumption is very important for both physical and mental development of children. So, utmost emphasis should be given to ensuring fair prices and safe supply of milk," they said.
The District Administration and the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) in Rajshahi jointly organized the discussion today at the premises of Rajabari Hat Dairy and Livestock Development Farm in Godagari Upazila, marking World Milk Day.
This year's theme of the days is: "Let's Celebrate the Power of Dairy."
World Milk Day is observed annually on June 1 to promote the importance of milk and dairy products in our diets.
Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Afia Akhter addressed the discussion as the chief guest, while Superintendent of Police Farjana Islam was present as the special guest. District Livestock Officer Dr Atwar Rahman presided over the event.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Faisal Ahmed, Livestock Officer Sharmin Shaila, Veterinary Officer Subrata Kumar Sarker, and Deputy Director of Dairy Development Farm Dr Ismail Haque also spoke on the occasion.
In his keynote presentation, Prof Khandaker Mozaffar Hossain from the Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Rajshahi University emphasized the importance of milk consumption in building a healthy nation.
He explained that protein is a vital nutrient for brain development and other essential functions of the human body.
Dr Atwar Rahman emphasized the need to expand the livestock sector to address protein deficiency and ensure food security.
He said many people suffer from malnutrition due to a lack of animal-based proteins such as milk, meat, and eggs. Developing local cattle breeds can help increase meat production, lower prices, and reduce malnutrition.
Earlier in the day, officials of the administration, police, and DLS brought out a colorful rally on the roads surrounding the Rajabari Hat Dairy Farm to mark the occasion.
