CHATTOGRAM, June 2, 2025 (BSS) - Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain expressed his satisfaction over the absence of waterlogging in the city despite continuous rainfall in Chattogram and surrounding areas.

Speaking during an inspection of several key areas-including Birja Khal, Miakhan Nagar, Dampara, Wasa Crossing, GEC Crossing, Kapasgola, Agrabad and Baklia-CCC mayor emphasized the role of maintaining uninterrupted water flow in the city's canals and drains in tackling waterlogging.

"This success is the result of coordinated efforts between the CCC and other service organizations," said Dr. Shahadat. 

"If this momentum continues with proper planning, city residents can hope to remain free from waterlogging in the future. Temporary water accumulation may occur during heavy downpours, but normal canal and drain flow will prevent lasting issues," he added.

The mayor noted that despite a shortage of equipment, the CCC is committed to keeping Chattogram's drainage and waste management systems functional. 

"Proper waste management is essential for maintaining 1,600 kilometers of canals and 57 gullies. Even if some low-lying areas experience brief accumulation, quick drainage efforts are in place," he said.

Dr. Shahadat added, "We are considering arrangements for automated drainage systems during heavy rainfall. InshaAllah, with these measures, waterlogging can be entirely eliminated in the future."

Highlighting ongoing initiatives, the mayor mentioned that a special CCC team is actively working on resolving drainage issues. "The Birja Khal cleaning team will resume their activities from tomorrow," he stated.

He also referred to a Tk 398 crore project proposed in 2022 by the previous administration to procure vehicles and equipment for cleaning the city's drainage network. "Although the project faced delays, I am now working to expedite its implementation," he said.

Dr. Shahadat identified low-lying areas and inadequate drainage infrastructure as the primary causes of waterlogging. 

He noted that specific improvements are underway in Khaja Road, Dampara and the GEC intersection, although full-scale road development remains pending due to ongoing CDA ramp construction.

"To mitigate water accumulation in those areas, pumps have already been installed to ensure quick drainage," he added.

CCC Chief Cleaning Officer Commander Ikhtiar Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury and Waterlogging Advisor Mayor Shahriar Khaled were also present during the inspection.
