SYLHET, June 3, 2025 (BSS) – Water is flowing above the danger level at four points of the Surma and Kushiyara rivers in Sylhet due to heavy rainfall during the past few days accompanied with the onrush of water from the upstream regions in India.

In Zakiganj upazila, at least 50 villages have been flooded after the dam on the Kushiyara River broke down.

The embankment broke about 100 feet in Rarai village of Zakiganj Sadar union, 50 feet in Bakharshal village and 40 feet in Loharmahal area of Khalachhara union.

The district administration said that around 11 thousand people have moved to shelter centers in four upazilas till Tuesday.

Control rooms have been set up and medical teams are being formed at the union level to provide medical services to the flood-affected people.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) of the Water Development Board said that the water of the Surma river in Sylhet was flowing one meter above the danger level at 6 pm today.

The water is rising slowly due to less rainfall in the last 24 hours. The water has increased by 9 centimeters in a day at this point.

Although the water has increased by 9 centimeters at the Sylhet point, it is flowing 28 centimeters below the danger level.

The water level of the Kushiyara river at Amalshid point in Zakiganj upazila is about two meters above the danger level. The water level has increased by 8 centimeters in 24 hours.

The water level is 48 centimeters above the danger level at Sheola point in Beanibazar upazila and 55 centimeters above the danger level in Fenchuganj upazila.

Zakiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Mahbubur Rahman said, “The administration is monitoring the situation round the clock. Work is underway to evacuate flood-affected people to safe shelters. Shelter centres have already been prepared.”

Deepak Ranjan Das, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board, Sylhet, said, “On Sunday, cracks appeared in various places in the Surma and Kushiyara rivers. On Monday, the dam broke at several places. Our team is working to bring the situation under control.”
