Fish fingerlings released in Rajshahi Central Jail ponds

RAJSHAHI, June 15, 2025 (BSS) - Around 550 kilograms of fish fingerlings consisting of various species, including rui, katla, mrigel, silver carps and pungus, were released in two ponds at Rajshahi Central Jail.

The jail authority released 3,300 pieces of fingerlings weighing 200-700 grams each on an average aimed at making the jail self-reliant in fish through boosting production.

Additional Inspector General of the Department of Jail Col Tanveer Hossain accompanied by Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Prison in Rajshahi division Kamal Hossain and Senior Superintendent at Rajshahi Central Jail Shah Alam Khan released the fingerlings today.
 
Speaking on the occasion, Col Tanveer Hossain said they are generating new doors of income for the government after the best and proper use of local resources.

He said the fishes to be produced from the ponds will be used as food of the prisoners that will reduce expenditure of the government together with making the jail self-reliant in food.
 
Besides, he said the jail is not only the home for punishment but also for correction. Here, the prisoners are getting training on various trades and vocations through productive activities that will contribute a lot towards their social rehabilitation.

In his remarks, DIG Prison Kamal Hossain said they have planned various programmes for making the jail management modernized and self-dependent.Various agricultural works, including fish farming, tree plantation and training, are the vital parts of the adopted programmes.
