RAJSHAHI, Sept 8, 2025 (BSS) - Government, non-government, and voluntary organizations today observed the International Literacy Day-2025 in the city with a renewed pledge to free the nation from the curse of illiteracy.

Marking the day, the district administration organized a colorful rally and a discussion meeting.

A large number of people, including representatives from various government and non-government development organizations, took part in the rally. It began from the Collectorate Building premises and paraded through several main streets before returning to the starting point.

Later, a discussion meeting was held at the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner's office.

This year's theme of the day, set by UNESCO, is "Promoting literacy in the digital era".

The theme highlights the importance of digital literacy, enabling individuals to access, understand, evaluate, create, and communicate with digital content safely and appropriately.

Deputy Commissioner Afia Akhter chaired the meeting, which was addressed by District Education Officer Abdul Wahab, District Primary Education Officer Anwar Hossain, Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr Mahbuba Khatun, and Assistant Director of the Bureau of Non-formal Education Raihanur Rahman.

The speakers emphasized that primary teachers and social workers have vital roles in accelerating the literacy campaign across the country to ensure the success of education-for-all initiatives.

They called for increased public awareness and collective efforts to supplement the interim government's initiatives to modernize and make the education system more inclusive and responsive to current needs.

They also noted that spreading the light of education among all, especially the poor and marginalized communities, is essential for building a prosperous nation.
