4-fishermen held for fishing illegally in Sundarbans

KHULNA, Oct 11, 2025 (BSS) - Forest officials detained four fishermen for fishing illegally in a restricted canal of the Kochikhali Wildlife Sanctuary under the Eastern Sundarbans early Saturday. 

The forest guards also seized fish worth over Taka one lakh, along with two fishing nets and two small boats.

The arrested fishermen were identified as Liton Matubbar,45, Taizul Howlader,18, Abu Khalek Mridha ,50, and Hamid Howlader,52,all residents of Bokultola and Sonatola villages in Sharankhola upazila.

According to the Forest Department, the operation was conducted by the Smart Team-1 of the Sharankhola Range, led by Forester Dilip Majumder. 

During the raid at Dudhraj Canal in the Kochikhali sanctuary, the team detained Liton Matubbar and three others.

Dilip Majumder said that fish including galda shrimp and various white fish species worth over Taka one lakh were seized, along with two nets and two dinghy boats.

Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the Eastern Sundarbans of Bagerhat, confirmed. 

A case was filed under the Forest Act against them with Bagerhat court in this connection.
