CHATTOGRAM, Oct 14, 2025 (BSS) - Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Dr. Md. Ziauddin today said that problems related to weights and measurements are not unique to Bangladesh but are a global challenge that affects business, health, and the environment.

He made the remarks while addressing a discussion meeting as the chief guest, organized by the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) at its Chattogram Divisional Office on the occasion of World Standards Day.

This year's theme for World Standards Day was "Standards for building a sustainable and developed world through coordinated efforts."

Dr. Ziauddin stressed the importance of maintaining uniformity in the use of the metric system across the country to prevent confusion and fraud in trade. "Honest businesses face difficulties when others resort to non-standard practices for unfair gain," he said.

He lauded BSTI's vital role in promoting fair trade practices and resolving many issues related to weights and measurements.

However, he noted that BSTI alone cannot address all challenges, calling for collective awareness and responsibility from citizens. "Each person must ensure they neither shortchange others nor accept incorrect quantities of goods," he added.

Engineer Md. Golam Rabbani, Head and Deputy Director of BSTI Chattogram Office, presided over the event.

Dr. Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Chattogram University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), presented the keynote paper.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md. Sharif Uddin and Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) General Secretary Kazi Iqbal Bahar Chhaberi also spoke as special guests.
