Call to integrate visually impaired into the society's mainstream

RANGPUR, Oct 15, 2025 (BSS) - The government is making arrangements to distribute modern canes with sensors with the aim of integrating the visually impaired into the mainstream of society and changing people's attitudes towards them. 

The district administration, Department of Social Services (DSS) Office and Disability Services and Support Center jointly organised the event marking the World White Cane Safety Day-2025 at the District Social Services Complex in the city today.

Deputy Director of the District Social Services Office Anil Chandra Barman presided over the discussion.
 
Additional Superintendent of Police Md Joynal Abedin, Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr Md Ruhul Amin and Additional Director of Rangpur Divisional Social Services Office Md Helal Uddin Bhuiyan, among others, addressed the event.
 
Anil Chandra Barman said a white cane is used as a symbol of providing mobility to the visually impaired.
 
The DSS has been providing allowances, education allowances and loan assistance to the welfare of the disabled. 
 
"Everyone should come forward to ensure safe travel, participation and mainstreaming of visually impaired people in every sphere of social activities," he said.

Additional Superintendent of Police Md Joynal Abedin said that the disabled are also the country's assets. 
 
This large population of disabled people should be utilized for the development of the country and the authorities' perspective on employment of disabled people in the workplace should be changed. 
 
He urged the government as well as private institutions to come forward to ensure a normal life for the disabled. 

Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr Md Ruhul Amin said that the government has continued to provide vaccinations to prevent various diseases and distribute vitamin A capsules to eliminate night blindness.
 
He advised people to seek help from a doctor as soon as possible if they have any eye problems. 

 
Additional Director of Rangpur Divisional Social Services Office Md Helal Uddin Bhuiyan said that about 80,000 disabled people in Rangpur have already come under the disability allowance. 

He said the National Foundation for the Development of the Disabled has been working to improve the quality of life, protect the interests, provide services and assist in the rehabilitation of the disabled.
 
Later, modern white canes were distributed among the visually impaired.
