14 fishermen held with illegal nets worth Tk 36cr in Munshiganj

MUNSHIGANJ, Oct 16, 2025 (BSS) - A joint team arrested 14 fishermen and seized illegal fishing nets worth about Taka 36 crore along with 33 kilograms of hilsa during a drive in Srinagar upazila of the district on Wednesday.

The information was revealed in a press release issued today by Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haq.

Based on information, a joint operation was carried out in the Baghra Bazar area of Srinagar upazila from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm yesterday. During the drive, the team seized 1 crore 5 lakh meters of illegal current nets valued at Taka 36.75 crore and 33 kilograms of hilsa fish, the release said.

The seized nets were later destroyed in the presence of the District Fisheries Officer, and the confiscated hilsa was distributed to a local orphanage.

Of the 14 arrested fishermen, three were released on bail as they were under 18 years of age. The remaining 11 were handed over to Srinagar Police Station for further legal action.

The Coast Guard will continue such operations in the future to protect the fishery resources.
