RANGPUR, Nov 23, 2025 (BSS) - Former Secretary and President of the Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB) AHM Shafiquzzaman has said that CAB is being reorganized to realise consumer rights.

“CAB's work is not just market monitoring. It has to work on civil rights. For example, awareness should be raised in drug pharmacies so that expired medicines, low-quality medicines and high prices and expired baby food are not sold,” he said.

He said this while speaking as the chief guest at a divisional level capacity building training on food fortification and consumer rights held at the Circuit House Auditorium in Rangpur city on Sunday.

Rangpur District CAB President Abdur Rahman presided over the event.

Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Enamul Ahsan was present as special guest.

Project Manager of non-governmental organization Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) Md Abul Bashar Chowdhury delivered a power point presentation on food qualities.

AHM Shafiquzzaman said that CAB members will play a role in raising awareness at the trader and consumer level about fertilizer syndicates, transport syndicates, and adulterated seeds.

In this regard, various organizations including the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, BSTI, Department of Agricultural Extension and Drug Administration Department are working.

People of Rangpur do not get proper treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital and for quality education, more educational institutions should be established here.

There are various problems in agriculture. There are problems with dealerships in Rangpur. Many people are more interested in profiting from dealerships.

The people of Rangpur do not get the right price for agricultural products. There is extortion on the road in transportation of goods..

“Therefore, CAB members should do a lot of work. Abu Sayeed’s Rangpur must have changed and it will not work as before,” he said.

He told the Deputy Commissioner that elections are coming. During the election, traders will increase the prices of products. They will do it for the greed of more profit. That issue should be monitored.

Rangpur Divisional Deputy Director of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection Md Jahangir Alam, its Assistant Director Momtaz Begum, Rangpur District CAB General Secretary Amirul Islam Raju, Metropolitan CAB President Dilip Kumar, General Secretary Joynal Abedin Mithu and other CAB leaders also spoke at the time.
