MANIKGANJ, Jan 28, 2026 (BSS) - A procession was held at the Paturia Ghat area of Manikganj on Tuesday, demanding urgent and permanent measures to prevent river erosion by the Padma and Jamuna rivers.

Local residents from different villages organized the programme, which began with a large procession from Paturia No. 5 ferry ghat. The procession marched through various roads in the area before ending at RCL Mor, where participants formed a human chain.

A protest rally was also held at RCL Mor. Speakers addressing the rally said that extensive areas from Daskandi to Nayakandi under Paturia Ghat and Shibalaya Union were severely affected by river erosion last year. They warned that if preventive measures are not taken before the upcoming rainy season, local people would suffer further losses this year.

Shibalaya Upazila Nirbahi Officer Monisha Rani Karmaker assured the demonstrators that necessary steps would be taken in due time.

She said initiatives would be coordinated through the Water Development Board and the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) to prevent further erosion.
