DHAKA, Feb 8, 2026 (BSS) - A mini truck hijacked by armed robbers in the early hours of Saturday was recovered within an hour and a half following a swift response coordinated through the National Emergency Service 999.

Police said efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest those involved in the hijacking, said a police press release.

At around 3:00am on Saturday, February 7, 2026, a driver named Gopal called 999 from a passerby's mobile phone, reporting that armed robbers from Ashulia area of Dhaka had snatched his mini truck (Dhaka Metro 12-6834), along with his mobile phone and cash, the release said.

He informed the emergency service that the vehicle was fitted with a GPS tracker accessible to the owner.

Upon receiving the call, 999 immediately contacted the vehicle's owner and alerted Gazipur Metropolitan Police Control Room, Gazipur District Police Control Room, and Dhaka Metropolitan Police Control Room.

Police patrol teams from Dhaka Metropolitan Police and Gazipur began a joint operation to recover the vehicle.

The emergency call was received by 999 call taker Constable Abdul Basit Bayezid.

The operation was coordinated by 999 dispatcher Sub-Inspector Jayanta Chowdhury under the supervision of Police Inspector Ziaul Karim, the night shift supervising officer of 999.

Based on the information relayed by 999, a patrol team from Kaliganj Police Station in Gazipur chased the vehicle for approximately four to five kilometers.

The mini truck was eventually recovered from beneath the Charsindur Bridge in Muktarpur Union, Kaliganj. Sensing the approach of police, the hijackers abandoned the vehicle on the roadside and fled the scene.

Sub-Inspector Riyad, who led the Kaliganj Police Station patrol team, confirmed the recovery to 999.

The rapid recovery highlights the effectiveness of coordinated action between the 999 emergency service and police units across multiple jurisdictions.
