KHULNA, Feb 23, 2026 (BSS) - The Department of Fisheries conducted a four-
phase special combing operation in Dacope upazila of Khulna to protect jatka
and ensure the natural growth and breeding of fish and shrimp.
The two-month drive, carried out from January 1 to February 23, 2026, was
jointly organised by the Office of the Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer,
Dacope, and the Upazila Administration.
During the operation, strict actions were taken against illegal nets in
different rivers, canals and water bodies, including the Pashur River, Shibsa
River, Bhadra River, Dhaki River, Chunkoori River and Jhapjhapia River.
The four phases of the drive were conducted from January 1-7, January 16-23,
January 31-February 6 and February 16-23.
A total of 11 mobile courts and 30 special operations were conducted during
the period.
During the drive, around 6.09 lakh meters of current nets, 58 behundi nets
and a large quantity of charpata, chargehra, mosquito and other illegal nets
(about 143 in number) were seized from rivers and canals.
The confiscated nets were immediately destroyed by burning.
Besides, about 70 kilograms of illegally caught Bagda and Parshe shrimp fry
were seized from fishermen and released back into the rivers to conserve
natural fish resources and ensure future production.
The upazila administration, river police, Bangladesh Coast Guard and
Bangladesh Navy provided assistance in conducting the drive.
Officials concerned said the use of illegal current and other harmful nets
destroys fish eggs and fry, posing a long-term threat to fish resources.
They expressed hope that the continued drives would help protect the natural
riverine ecosystem, increase fish breeding and ensure sustainable livelihoods
for fishermen.
Abu Bakkar Siddique, senior upazila fisheries officer in Dacope, said such
drives would continue in the future under a zero-tolerance policy against the
use of illegal nets.
