MANIKGANJ, Feb 27, 2026 (BSS) - The re-excavation work of the Kashadaha Canal, which bears the memory of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, has been inaugurated under the initiative of the Water Management Cooperative Society in Sibalaya Upazila of the district.

MP for Manikganj-1 constituency SA Jinnah Kabir formally inaugurated the work as the chief guest on Thursday evening.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Monisha Rani Karmaker, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Jannatul Naim, Upazila Agriculture Officer Razia Tarafder, Engineer Mizanur Rahman, Project Implementation Officer (PIO) Tahmina Akter and project leaders, including President Shafi Uddin Khan and General Secretary Aurangzeb, were present, among others.

Speaking at the function, the MP said Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman had taken part in the canal digging programme at Kashadaha on December 1, 1979, as part of a nationwide irrigation initiative. Over time, the canal lost its effectiveness, he added.

He said around 4,001 acres of land are expected to benefit from the re-excavation of the canal, once considered a model irrigation system in the area.

The success of the project, he noted, will depend on maintaining the navigability of the Jamuna River, the main water source for the irrigation scheme.
