RAJBARI, march 3, 2026 (BSS) - The District Fisheries Office has officially commenced the distribution of incentive rice to fishermen in Rajbari as part of the government's effort to support those affected by the ban on jatka fishing in the Padma River.

The four-month ban, which runs from February to May 30, aims to conserve jatka (young hilsa) during their breeding season.

In an effort to alleviate the financial strain on local fishermen, the government has initiated an incentive programme that provides 40 kilograms (Kg) of VGF (Vulnerable Group Feeding) rice to each fisherman family in the district.

Since the launch of the programme, a total of 88.64 metric tons of rice has been distributed to 1,108 fishermen across eight unions, including Rajbari Municipality, Alipur, Khanganje, Chandani, Barat, Pachuria, Dwadashi and Mijanpur.

The rice distribution for February and March has been provided at a rate of 80-kg per family.

In total, 522.88 metric tons of rice have been allocated to 3,268 fishermen in four upazilas of Rajbari district who have adhered to the fishing ban.

The initiative is seen as a crucial support measure, helping struggling fisherman families maintain their livelihoods during the suspension of their primary income-generating activity.

The government aims to continue these efforts throughout the ban period, ensuring that the local fishing communities receive the necessary support during this challenging time.

Authorities are optimistic that the initiative will not only help ease the hardship faced by the fishermen but also contribute to the protection and sustainability of the Padma River's fish stocks.
