KHULNA, March 6, 2026 (BSS) - Police have arrested a Khulna Jubo League leader during a drive in the Paltan area of the capital Dhaka.
The arrestee was identified as Shawkat Hossain, alias Kala Shawkat, president of Ward No. 26 unit of Jubo League in Khulna city, confirmed Taimur Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khulna Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB).
He said acting on a tip-off, members of Khulna Metropolitan DB, with assistance from Paltan Police Station, arrested Shawkat from the Polwel Market area in Paltan at around 12:15 am on Thursday night.
Shawkat was brought to Khulna this morning.
According to police, at least five cases have been filed against Shawkat on charges including extortion, land grabbing and attacking the anti-discrimination student movement in 2024.
He is also accused of embezzling a large amount of money in a wheat scandal and committing various irregularities using his close ties with the influential Sheikh family in Khulna.
