CHATTOGRAM, April 2, 2026 (BSS) – Two persons have been arrested in connection with the murder of an elderly woman at Purba Bailchhari village in Banshkhali upazila.

The arrestees are Kashem, son of the deceased Rehana, and his wife Nargish Akhter.

Assistant Director of RAB-7’s media wing ARM Mozaffar Hossain confirmed the matter this afternoon.

He said the arrests were made during a joint operation by RAB-7, Chattogram, and RAB-15, Cox’s Bazar, in the Lakshyachar union area of Chakaria upazila in Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday afternoon.

RAB said the deceased, Rehena Begum, 62, used to live in Purba Bailchhari village in Banshkhali upazila. Her eldest son, Belal, lived abroad, while her younger son, Kashem, and daughter-in-law, Nargish Akhter, lived with her.

Although Belal sent money for his mother’s treatment, Kashem allegedly misused the funds, leading to a longstanding family dispute.

It is alleged that Kashem and his wife attacked Rehena Begum with a sharp knife between 10:00pm on June 5, 2025, and the morning of June 6. They later hid the blood-stained clothes inside the house.

After the incident was revealed, locals and police rushed the victim to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where she was declared dead.

The victim’s elder brother, Md. Muktar Ahmed, filed a murder case with Banshkhali Police Station.

RAB official Mozaffar Hossain said the accused had been evading arrest by moving between different areas of Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar. Acting on a tip-off, a joint team apprehended them and later handed them over to Banshkhali Police Station for further legal action.
