HABIGANJ, April 22, 2026 (BSS) - At least seven business establishments were completely gutted in a fire that broke out at Bithangal Akhra Bazar in Baniachong upazila of the district early today.

According to locals and Fire Service officials, the blaze originated around 2:00 am from a restaurant. It spread quickly after a gas cylinder inside the establishment exploded, engulfing nearby shops within a short time.

Local residents rushed to the scene and attempted to control the fire. However, the intensity of the flames made it impossible to salvage goods from the affected establishments.

In total, seven businesses including three grocery stores and an electronics shop were completely destroyed in the blaze.

After nearly two hours of combined efforts by locals and firefighters, the fire was brought under control. By then, extensive damage had already occurred.

Affected traders estimated losses at around Tk 80 lakh.

Baniachong Fire Service Station Leader Riaz Uddin confirmed the incident, saying they reached the spot as soon as possible but were delayed due to road obstructions.

Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the fire.
