Block raids intensified in crime-prone areas in capital

DHAKA, April 21, 2026 (BSS) - Law enforcement agencies have intensified block raid operations in crime-prone areas of the capital to maintain law and order and ensure public safety.

Strict action is being taken against those involved in terrorism, extortion, drug trafficking, mugging and other criminal activities in Dhaka Metropolitan City. 

Additionally, lists of terrorists, extortionists, and drug dealers are being prepared to further improve the law and order situation. 

Deputy Commissioner of the Media and Public Relations Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), N M Nasiruddin, told BSS that block raid operations have been intensified in crime-prone areas of the capital to maintain stability in law and order and ensure the safety of people and their property. 

These operations will continue to control crime and bring criminals under the law quickly, he said. 

Recently, 54 individuals involved in various crimes were arrested during such operations by the Tejgaon Division of DMP, said Nasiruddin. 

He said special block raids were conducted in crime-prone areas under Mohammadpur, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Adabor, Tejgaon, Tejgaon Industrial Area, and Hatirjheel police stations. 

In March this year, DMP operations led to the arrest of a total of 9,259 individuals in connection with various crimes, and 1,305 cases were filed. 

Additionally, 11 police stations in the capital arrested 2,625 individuals during the same month. Among them, Mohammadpur Police Station arrested 674, Hazaribagh 494, New Market 51, Mirpur 469, Shahbagh 159, Banshal 132, Lalbagh 128, Uttara West 234, Dhanmondi 67, Badda 115, and Motijheel 102 individuals. 

Officials concerned stated that law enforcement agencies-including Bangladesh Police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID)-are maintaining a strict stance to prevent any form of violence and disorder in the country. 

Assistant Inspector General (Media and Public Relations) at Police Headquarters, AHM Shahadat Hossain, said that increased patrols and intelligence activities, continuous operations against criminals, technology-based surveillance, and coordinated cooperation between police and the public have played important roles in improving the law and order situation. 

He added that the overall situation is significantly better than before. The police force continues to work to ensure internal security, maintain law and order, prevent and investigate crimes, and safeguard the lives and property of citizens. 

Chief of the Detective Branch (DB) of DMP, Additional Police Commissioner Md. Shafiqul Islam, said that lists of terrorists, extortionists, and drug dealers are being prepared to further improve the situation. 

He added that initiatives are being taken to identify criminals' locations through various technologies and take action against them. While the current situation is quite good, he expressed hope that it will improve further. 

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) continues to work in specialized areas such as murder, money laundering, cybercrime, fraud, organized crime, terrorism, and forensic analysis, and remains active in bringing offenders under the law. 

CID Special Superintendent of Police (Media), Jasim Uddin Khan, said that in February and March this year, CID arrested seven individuals in connection with various crimes and filed six cases, including two related to money laundering.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) is conducting strong operations against drugs, illegal weapons, broker syndicates, and adulteration to control the law and order situation. 

According to RAB's media wing, 627 individuals were arrested in February along with 44 mobile court operations, while in March, 852 individuals were arrested and 99 mobile courts were conducted.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) continues to act as vigilant guardians of the country's borders, preventing smuggling, drug trafficking, and human trafficking, stopping border violations, ensuring border security, and assisting civil administration in maintaining internal law and order during emergencies. 

According to BGB Public Relations Officer Md. Shariful Islam, in March this year, operations across border areas and other locations led to the seizure of smuggled goods worth Taka 165 cr 76 lakh 74 thousand. 

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mohammadpur Police Station, Md. Mezbah Uddin, said that regular operations are being conducted in the area, with criminals being identified and arrested. 

In March alone, 673 individuals were arrested in various cases and 7,000 yaba tablets were recovered, he said. 

He also noted that suspects in the recent Asadul murder case were arrested within 24 hours, and patrol activities have been intensified. 

He added that strict action is being taken against extortionists, muggers, juvenile gangs, and terrorists, with no leniency shown in Mohammadpur. 

OC of New Market Police Station, Mohammad Ayub, said that multiple teams are working to improve law and order in the area and no criminals are being spared. 

OC of Dhanmondi Police Station, Muhammad Saiful Islam, said that people in the area are living more peacefully than at any time before due to ongoing law enforcement efforts. 

OC of Badda Police Station, Kazi Md. Nasirul Amin, said that the law and order situation is gradually improving and regular anti-drug operations are being carried out within the framework of the law. 

OC of Shahbagh Police Station, Md. Moniruzzaman, said that while the situation is currently good, efforts are ongoing to improve it further. He added that they are working tirelessly to control terrorism, extortion, and drug-related crimes.
