KHULNA, April 22, 2026 (BSS) – A media advocacy meeting titled “Strengthening Social Protection for Climate-Induced and Internally Displaced Migrants: Challenges and Way Forward” was held today at the Shaheed Humayun Kabir Balu Auditorium of Khulna Press Club.
The programme was organised by Caritas Bangladesh, Khulna Region. The Convener of Khulna Press Club, Enamul Haque, attended the event as the chief guest.
Speakers at the meeting said climate change not only displaces individual families but also disrupts entire communities. Natural disasters are increasingly threatening livelihoods, forcing people from coastal and disaster-prone areas to migrate to cities, particularly Khulna.
They noted that if the basic needs of vulnerable people in coastal regions are ensured, migration pressure on cities would decrease.
As the mass media plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion and policymaking, speakers expressed hope that the media would highlight the realities of climate migrants and advocate for inclusive social protection systems.
Assistant Professor Dr Mohammad Ismail Hossain of the Disaster Management Institute at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology presented the keynote paper.
Project Coordinator Pabitra Kumar Mondal delivered the welcome address.
Journalists and community leaders from four wards of Khulna City Corporation took part in the meeting.
The meeting aimed to raise awareness among media professionals about the issues and rights of climate migrants, identify gaps in existing social protection programmes, encourage responsible and evidence-based reporting, and foster dialogue among media, government and civil society.
