BAGERHAT, June 3, 2026 (BSS) - Authorities have removed the sole remaining crocodile from the historic Khanjahan Ali (RA) shrine pond following a recent fatal attack on a child.

The joint operation comprising the Forest Department, district administration and local officials began early this morning. Spotting the crocodile on the pond's eastern bank around 10:30 am, officials used specialized feeding techniques to safely lure and secure the animal by noon.

It was subsequently transported to the Khulna Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in a specialized vehicle.

The removal follows public safety concerns raised after an eight-year-old child, Fatema, was attacked and killed while bathing in the pond on Monday night. Her body was later recovered by rescue teams, triggering widespread calls from locals to clear the pond.

"Considering public safety, we decided to remove the crocodile from the shrine pond," said Bagerhat Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mosa. Atia Khatun.

"The animal has been taken to the Khulna Rehabilitation Center for now, and concerned authorities will make a final decision regarding its permanent placement later."
