DHAKA, Aug 17, 2025 (BSS) - FactWatch, a Bangladesh-based independent fact-checking organization, has identified two pictures claiming that a Bangladeshi elderly woman went to pay respect at Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's memorial on August 15, which were actually an Indian woman's images who was protesting in India.

FactWatch investigation team identified that two pictures of an old woman holding a candle are being shared on Facebook.

The captions of the pictures claim that the centenarian woman went to pay her respects at Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's memorial at Dhanmondi, on August 15, they added.

The team found that the claim is false. "The woman shown in the picture is Maya Rani Chakraborty, who is 90 years old. On August 9, 2024, a female doctor named Moumita Debnath was gang-raped and murdered at the R. G. Kar Government Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. To protest this incident, protesters held a protest march called "Girls Seize the Night" in West Bengal on Wednesday, August 14, 2024," he added.

They mentioned that Maya Rani Chakraborty also participated in the march. "The pictures circulating on Facebook are originally from that time. It has nothing to do with paying homage to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's memorial," they added.
